bIRTHING KITS
An initiative originally of the Zonta Club of Adelaide Hills, the birthing kit was designed specifically to be a cost effective tool to promote the '7 cleans' in childbirth in developing countries.
The contents are intended to promote hygiene in childbirth and thus prevent the most common causes of related infections. They contain items for the birth itself (eg., plastic sheeting, soap & disposable gloves), for the baby (clamps and a blade to attend to the umbilical cord) and to prevent common post-natal infections (eg., gauze to clean the baby’s eyes).
Once assembled, the birthing kits are distributed by the project organisers with the help of NGOs in a variety of developing countries (who train local women to be birthing attendants and in the use the kit).
The project is operated through its own distinct organisation, the Birthing Kit Foundation (Australia), now known as KIT. The Foundation was established to facilitate management of Australian Federal Government funding support for the project through AUSAID. This provides substantive dollar-for-dollar assistance based on the donations of money and time from Zonta Clubs and other project participants.
The earliest supporters of this project, Zonta Clubs continue to be an important part of the Birthing Kit Project. The majority of all Assembly Days are organised through Zonta Clubs, and Zonta Clubs contribute over 50% of the annual funds to the Foundation.
How does the project work? Basically, a Zonta Club raises a set amount of funds to obtain component items from the Birthing Kit Foundation. An assembly day is set and the components delivered to the coordinator accordingly.
On the day, the agreed number of kits (for which components were ordered) are assembled, packed for shipping and delivered to the carrier to send them to their destination.

BREAST CUSHIONS AND CANCER SUPPORT: SIDE BY SIDE VIDEO
Breast Care Cushions
Possibly the most widely known Zonta service project in Australia, the Zonta Breast Care Cushion is actually the brain child of a local District 24 Zontian, Ann Selle. A member of the Zonta Club of Botany Bay, Ann designed the cushion in 1994 after hearing from a friend about the difficulty of recovering from breast surgery.
Since then, thousands of women in New South Wales and around Australia have benefited from this project. By the centenary of votes for women in Australia in 2002, Clubs had made a pile of cushions as high as Sydney’s landmark Centrepoint Tower. By early 2008, the tally was about 46,500 cushions, which is about enough to fill a typical three bedroom family home from floor to ceiling!
The Zonta Breast Care Cushion aids recovery by allowing the woman to sit, sleep and rest comfortably, as well as by preventing hurt from bumps while walking around and any discomfort from wearing seat belts.
(About 2% of breast cancers occur in men, and the Zonta Breast Care Cushion is certainly provided to men on request.)
How does the project work? Basically, a Zonta Club undertakes to keep one or more hospitals supplied with the Zonta Breast Care Cushions and the staff undertakes to ensure that each person undergoing breast surgery receives a cushion to take home.
Zonta Club of Redcliffe make the cushions from beginning to end using the work of Club members at friendly workshops held regularly at a member’s home, and we average 160 per year.

Domestic and Family Violence Awareness Campaign
Since 2015, Zonta Club of Redcliffe Inc. has built ongoing partnerships with local sporting clubs including Redcliffe Dolphins, Peninsula Power and currently sponsors the Redcliffe Netball Association. Our club successfully proposed to District 22 that our initiative be expanded Statewide and this was well on track until COVID-19 delayed our plans. But, we will be back, so look out for our signature Zonta Says No to Domestic Violence messaging.
We erect our Zonta Says No marquee at games/matches promoting our local club and the ‘Zonta Says No to Violence’ campaign. Many players wear orange socks and/or ribbons in support of Zonta. We give away a great number of pens, wristbands, stress balls, and other promotional material as well as informative literature that outlines Zonta’s vision for the future of women and girls in all communities.

Zonta domestic violence campaign round
The home game will also raise awareness as Domestic and Family Violence Awareness Month draws to a close. It is the sixth year the Dolphins have partnered with The Zonta Club of Redcliffe for the campaign. Zonta President Marie Stewart said it showed supporters the club had no tolerance for coercive control or gender-based violence and abuse. Zonta members will form a guard of honour for the players running on to the field. Orange is the colour used to represent domestic violence, so Zonta members will wear orange shirts and the players will wear orange socks. There will also be a raffle to raise money for DV programs, supported by Zonta Redcliffe. “This match day has been very successful for the last six years and Zonta Redcliffe are hoping to expand this next year in May for all local winter football codes or sports, such as Australian Rules, Rugby Union, Field Hockey and would appreciate these clubs showing an interest to be involved as well,” Ms Stewart said. Summer sports can be involved during the 16 days of Activism from November 25 to December 10. To find out more, email info@zontaredcliffe.org.au or phone 0422 932 337. |

DOMESTIC AND FAMILY VIOLENCE AWARENESS VIDEO CAMPAIGN 2022
To add to our sports day domestic violence we developed a 1 minute video to show on the big screen at half-time at our local stadium at NRL/QRL gamesTo complement this we produced a series of posters featuring the cast of thew video, each with their own message to generate community changes in attitudes and awareness of DV. Funding was sourced through the Qld Gambling Community Benefit Fund Grant in 2022.
